There was an uncomfortable silence between me and Grace. The voice of the news reporter was like a quiet melody in our busy minds. we didn't need to say anything out loud. Cause we both were thinking about what made us both uneasy: Roxanne: "so celebrities and politicians are going missing all around the world and the police can't identify if they ran away or were kidnapped cause the only evidence they leave behind is an obscure slogan written with bl*ood? More specifically, their own bl*ood?" Grace let out a sigh and took a sip of her coffee. Grace: "i told you all the big shots are in weird cults." Roxanne: "Man i hate capitalism..."
Grace: "anyways. enough with these spooky conspiracy theories, I've got great news!" Roxanne: "what is it?" She giggled playfully and tucked her hair behind her ear like a teenager. Wait, is this about a... Grace: "I met a guy at work!" She grabbed a pillow from the couch and screamed into it excitedly. Oh Grace...always falling in love. I rolled my eyes and shook my head. Roxanne: "yeah I could tell." Grace: "You should've seen him, He's so handsome! And he's such a gentleman. He was being so nice and amiable the entire time and can you guess how much he tipped me? A hundred bucks!" Roxanne: "isn't that kind of a red flag?" Grace: "nope. He's just being generous."
I stared at her with a judgemental gaze and frowned. There was no need to voice my disapproval, she could already tell. Grace looked away and as her habit, bit her lower lip nervously. She took a deep breath as am attempt to gather the courage to speak up. Grace: "Listen Ro I know I've had many dead-end relationships, and so have you!" Roxanne: "Are you talking about Tyler? Excuse you but we never broke up, we're on a break!" Grace: "for three months? And received no messages or calls from him? Is that what you call a break?" As much as I wanted to clap back, I had to accept that grace had a point. Things are rocky between me and Tyler.
He was the first and the only b*oyfriend I've ever had. We first met each other when we where freshmen and started to date eventually. The best word to describe Tyler was...reliable. I always struggled with boys, figuring them out was a huge challenge for me. But i never felt that way with Tyler. He was quiet, thoughtful, unreadable but relatable. The kind of man I needed in my life. At the University, we would lie down on the cold and dewy grass and talk about anything that came to mind. The future, the past, the present, happy memories, sad memories, milestones, likes, dislikes, plans, family, friends, enemies, etc... he was more of a listener than a speaker. he'd pay close attention to all the details I mentioned and how it made me think and feel, then asked further and deeper questions about them afterwards. Maybe that's the reason I liked him. I wanted someone who listened, and cared.
But after graduating university, he started to distance himself. He was barely talking and became more secretive than ever. And he always refused to open up to me no matter how hard i tried to get closer to him like we used to be. And because of that, we were fighting a lot everyday, over the pettiest things. He moved to a different place and I never heard from him ever since. I knew he had difficulties finding a job, and his family weren't getting along, but does that excuse his terrible attitude? No. I don't think so.
Roxanne: "You know what Grace, you're right. I shouldn't judge anyone I've never met." Grace: "really? So you don't mind?" I smiled and shook my head. Grace beamed and hugged me gratefully while laughing. Grace: "thank you angel! You don't know how guilty i feel dating someone you dislike." She hold my face with both hands and kissed my cheek. Grace: "does this mean you're coming to the club with me?" Roxanne: "yeah...wait what?"
Grace: "we planned on meeting at the club tonight, are you coming or what?" Roxanne: "why would i willingly choose to be a third wheel? It's your date." Grace: "well I need my emotionally supportive grumbler if things don't go well." Roxanne: "that's actually reasonable." Grace: "I know." We spent the morning and the afternoon doing nothing in particular since our shifts for the week was over. Just relaxing, watching TV and eating snacks, like the calm before the storm. the evening had to come sooner or later. Grace helped me put on a dress and do my makeup, not because I couldn't do it, because she wanted me to 'fit in'. And I didn't hate it to be honest, A girl has to glam up sometimes for her own confidence.
We arrived at the club after a 10 minute drive and the fisrt thing we did was looking for 'daniel'. We found him sitting at the bar talking to a guy that weirdly looked just like him. It was hard to tell them apart under the dim lights. Roxanne: "so which one's daniel?" Grace: "uhh...i don't know?" Roxanne: "great, that's gonna a very fun conversation." Grace: "can you please shut up." Daniel: "Grace!" We both immediately turned in surprise and saw the guy on the right waving his hand. Daniel: "come here."
Grace smiled and hurriedly walked towards him, I hesitantly followed her from behind. Grace: "Hi! Sorry I'm a bit late. I came with my bestfriend Roxanne. Are you guys twins?" Daniel: "that's right. This is my brother sameul." Samuel: "Hello, it's great to see you." Looking at the two of them up close, they weren’t exactly identical. They were undeniably similar, but daniel was a brunet while sameul was black haired. Sameul had softer facial features unlike his brother who had prominent cheekbones and a sharper jawline. Sameul also had darker eyes, but his deep dimples were the first thing that caught the eye. he seemed a bit shy and uncomfortable. I could tell he was here for the same purpose as me, the emotional support sidekick.
Daniel: "do you want to dance?" Grace: "Sure!" Daniel took Grace's hand and led her to the dance floor, and the two loners were left behind. I sat on the chair next to sameul, but I had no idea if he was inclined to chat with me, And I bet he felt the same way about me. But thankfully, he was the first to ask a question. Sameul: "hey, do you want a drink?" Roxanne: "yeah but you don't need to buy it for me." Sameul: "alright..." Oh lord this is awkward. Roxanne: "...do you come to parties often?" He chuckled and took a sip of his drink.
Sameul: "Do i look like it?" Roxanne: "so that's a no." Sameul: "what about you? Are you into clubbing?" I smirked and started to tap my fingers on the table. Roxanne: "do i look like it?" He smiled and looked down shyly. Sameul: "ok fair." It was actually pretty easy to talk to sameul. He got more talkative as he felt more comfortable, and we realised we had a lot in common. From personality traits, lifestyle, hobbies... he studied literature and as it seemed he never quit being a nerd, which was really adorable.
Sameul: "and the professor called out my name on stage to speak about my project and when I was done he gave me the award for the best speech so I framed it and I think I still have it on wall, it's a bit embarrassing i know." Roxanne: "that's not embarrassing at all, what was your project?" Sameul: "history of poetry in the middle east." Roxanne: "that's awesome!" Sameul: "is it? Thanks!" As he got more confident, he also became more charismatic. The way he would explain his field so professionally and enthusiastically, the way he seemed to forget about the world around him when the topic was his favourite things, the way he talked with his hands... I don't think I ever been so amused by a guy.
I took the risk and sat closer to him, and he rested his arm on the back of my chair in a casual manner. Which was rather unexpected from someone like him. But to be honest, I didn't mind it at all. I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder. That couldn't have been sameul. We weren't intimate enough for physical touch. So I looked up, and my heart skipped a beat as I met his eyes. Tyler: "Am I interrupting something?"
